Expanded bike lanes coming to Upper East Side

In a public meeting, Community Board 8 on the Upper East Side agreed Wednesday to turn the bike lane between 59th Street and 68th Street on Second Avenue into a green-painted lane with a buffer lane next to it to protect cyclists from cars and trucks.

During the morning and evening rush, from 7 to 10 am  and 3pm to 8 pm,  vehicles can drive in the lane on Second Avenue next to the buffer lane.  But the rest of the time, that driving lane will be used for parking and deliveries.

The plan also includes building a pedestrian island at the Queensboro Bridge to safely navigate cyclists around traffic.
