Eric Garner's mother confronts Mayor de Blasio

NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - Four years ago this month, Eric Garner died in an encounter with police officers on Staten Island.

Now disciplinary proceedings are moving forward against NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo and Sgt. Kizzy Adonis, the supervising sergeant who was on the scene when Pantaleo placed Garner in a chokehold.

Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, believes that all the officers involved in the incident must face disciplinary proceedings—not just two.

At a town hall meeting Wednesday night, Carr confronted the mayor about that. She asked Bill de Blasio if he would support holding all the cops accountable.

De Blasio responded that he knows she disagrees that only Pantaleo and Adonis are facing action but that he was "being straightforward" about the decision that came out of a previous review.

But Carr on Thursday said the mayor did not directly answer her question. His response said "nothing to what I asked about him holding all the officers accountable," Carr said. "And this is what I want to see."

The mayor addressed the issue again Thursday.

"I said to her straightforward there's two officers involved—that's the determination NYPD made early on and I respect that," de Blasio said. "There will be due process. There will be a public trial and we can't prejudge the outcome."

The NYPD never charged Pantaleo. Rather, the Civilian Complaint Review Board brought charges, which could lead to his suspension or firing.

And four years later, the Garner family is still waiting for the U.S. Justice Department to decide if it will file civil rights charges in the case.
