Deep freeze hits New York City region
NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - Dangerously cold conditions have enveloped the New York area. The National Weather Service issued a Wind Chill Advisory and a Wind Chill Warning for several counties in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut until Sunday morning.
"The cold weather we've seen all week continues today and this weekend. Wind chill will make it feel like -10 to -20," Mayor Bill de Blasio said. "Stay warm, keep an eye out for neighbors, and bring pets inside."
"A Wind Chill Advisory means that cold air and the wind will combine to create low wind chills," the NWS said in a weather alert. "Frostbite and hypothermia can occur if precautions are not taken. Make sure you wear a hat and gloves."
If you must go outside, emergency officials say, make sure to "dress appropriately and wear a hat and gloves."
Fox 5 meteorologist Nick Gregory forecasts a high of 12 degrees and a low of 5 degrees Saturday and a high of 21 degrees and a low of 3 degrees on Sunday.
The good news is that more seasonable weather is expected to return early next week with temperatures in the high 30s and near 40s, he said. For some, it will feel downright balmy.
The powerful snowstorm that pummeled the area left behind a mess of icy snow, complicating things for motorists and pedestrians.
