Closed NYS prison sold at auction for $600K

NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - A shuttered prison in northern New York sold at auction to a Canadian company that hopes to turn it into a summer camp.

Opened in 1990, the Chateaugay Correctional Facility was a medium-security prison with 30 structures on 99 acres of land. The buildings were used as administrative, dormitory, medical, dining, kitchen, recreational, vocational, garage, maintenance, and storage facilities.

It closed in 2014 as part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's plan to shut down several prisons because of the declining inmate population.

The property is located on State Route 11 in Franklin County—just about six miles south of the Canadian border.

Adar Investment Inc. won the auction with a $600,000 bid. A rep said Adar would like to see the property used as a Jewish summer camp.
