GLEN COVE, N.Y. (FOX 5 NY) - Trey Samuels, 12, has autism. He needs some help tying his shoes and socializing. But not when it comes to reading, especially a book written by his parents. Trey was the inspiration for the main character.
"The Amazingly Awesome Amani Takes on Jitters and Fear" is about a boy with autism who overcomes obstacles on the first day of school by summoning up the strength to conquer these emotions through superhero powers.
It takes place at the Tiegerman School for students with language and autism spectrum disorders like Trey.
When he was diagnosed, his dad, a corrections officer by trade and a self-proclaimed author by accident, started writing the book to take a different approach to explain to their younger daughter why her brother appeared to be different.
Jamiyl and Tracy-Ann Samuels wrote the book to raise awareness about autism after Trey was diagnosed with the disorder.
