Backlash over POW/MIA 'racist' article

An article referring to the POW/MIA flag as 'racist' has sparked backlash online.

The Washington Spectator initially published the article which was recently republished by Newsweek.

It alleges that former President Richard Nixon invented the flag to draw attention away from those killed by Americans in Vietnam and make U.S. soldiers the victims.

The author, Rick Perlstein, referred to the 'Prisoners of War/Missing in Action' movement as a 'cult.'

"Useful only to venal right-wing politicians who wish to exploit hatred by calling it heritage," wrote Perlstein.

But comments  slamming  Newsweek, the Washington Spectator and Perlstein have been posted all over social media.

Those firing back say the flag is a symbol intended to honor of prisoners of war and those missing in action from all wars.
