Baby otter on display at Bronx Zoo

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - BEBEH OTTER ALERT. A young Asian small-clawed otter can now be seen with his parents at an exhibit in in JungleWorld at the Bronx Zoo. The Wildlife Conservation Society named him Monty. He was born at the zoo over the summer to parents Jasmine and Gyan.

"Around a month and a half after he was born, little Monty started making more appearances outside the nest box," animal keeper Lisa Walker wrote in a blog post. "Jasmine takes motherhood very seriously, and is in charge of where Monty ought to be, such as taking a nap in the nest box or getting a swimming lesson, whether or not Monty agrees. Gyan is busy transferring hay all over the place until it is in just the right location. He recently started bringing Monty bits of fish."

The Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) is native to freshwater streams, rivers, creeks, and coastal areas in parts of China, India, and Southeast Asia, and according to the Smithsonian.

The Wildlife Conservation Society runs the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo and New York Aquarium. It recently announced a new strategic plan along with new branding.

"The urgency to preserve the world's wildlife, and all of its biodiversity demands that we step up our efforts beyond conservation as usual," WCS President and CEO Cristián Samper said in a statement. The society said that the new strategy's goal is to conserve the largest wild places in 15 priority regions.
