14-year-old opens fire, kills teen girl in Bronx
A 16-year-old girl was shot and killed outside Bronx Latin School after a fight broke out among a group of teens on school grounds. Police say a 14-year-old boy, who doesn't attend the school, opened fire during the altercation. FOX 5's Linda Schmidt reports from the scene.
NEW YORK - Police are hunting for a 14-year-old gunman after a 16-year-old girl was struck in the head by a stray bullet and killed in the Bronx on Monday.
What we know:
Police say the incident happened on the grounds of the Bronx Latin School at around 5 p.m. Monday in the Morrisania section.
A group of around 20 teens were hanging out in the school yard when a fistfight broke out, including the 14-year-old.
Authorities say someone handed the 14-year-old shooter a gun, and he opened fire, firing three shots, one of which struck the 16-year-old girl as people ran.
The victim, identified as Evette Jeffrey, 16, was shot in the head by a stray bullet. She was rushed to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition, but died from her injuries.
"Every two weeks something's going on here," a resident said, reacting to the shooting.
What's next:
Police say they know who 14-year-old shooter is and are currently working to track him down.
The victim was also not a student at the school and was reportedly visiting her boyfriend who attends the school.
