NYC, NJ face severe weather threat Tuesday as flash flooding, high winds target Tri-State

NEW YORK CITY - More heavy rain and potentially severe thunderstorms are expected Tuesday in the New York City area, including most of New Jersey. 

The National Weather Service said it's part of a more widespread storm threat this week, as the forecast calls for three straight days of unsettled weather.

What we know:

More rounds of rain and thunderstorms are predicted for Tuesday afternoon and evening across the Lower Hudson Valley, Northeast New Jersey and NYC metro area, NWS officials said. 

The storms could bring localized flash flooding, damaging winds, large hail and an isolated tornado. Scattered power outages may also occur.

FOX 5 NY Meteorologist Mike Woods said the afternoon forecast remains unsettled, with pockets of showers and storms beginning at 2 p.m. The heaviest downpours are expected between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Here's a breakdown of when to expect possible severe weather later this week:

• Wednesday: The strongest threat for storms in New Jersey and New York City appears to be overnight Wednesday, which will bring another flash flood risk. The day will start off cloudy and humid before a strong storm system sweeps the area starting between 10 p.m. and midnight.
• Thursday: The day will bring another chance for severe weather. A Level 2 out of 5 severe threat shifts slightly farther south to include most of the Mid-Atlantic.
• Friday: The FOX Forecast Center noted that we will likely see a fourth straight day with a Level 2 out of 5 storm threat once confidence increases.
