Federal and local agencies have rescued more than 13,000 people in Houston and the surrounding areas in the aftermath of massive flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. Volunteers and residents with boats are also helping thousands who are stranded. The Houston Police Department lost one of its own Sgt. Steve Perez was on his way to work in the dark when he drowned in the flood waters.

U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter crews have rescued thousands of people from flooded communities in the Houston area. The Coast Guard has seven MH-60 Jayhawks and 14 MH-65 Dolphins flying missions.

American Red Cross volunteers from New Jersey are heading south to help storm victims in Texas and Louisiana. The New Jersey chapter sent emergency vehicles to help those whose lives have been turned upside down by the flooding.
