School reopening debate in New Jersey

The debate over reopening schools is intensifying in New Jersey, as three state lawmakers are proposing to begin the new school year with remote-only learning.

Will NYC schools reopen?

Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza told FOX 5 NY that the city's schools will operate five days a week in some form this fall: either entirely distance learning or a blended model with some distance learning and some in-class learning. Families can request all-online for any reason. The deadline to request all-remote learning is August 7. Carranza said that any family opting for all-remote will be given the chance to change back to blended learning every quarter throughout the school year.

These starkly different scenarios highlight the widening gap between the haves and have-nots, making the phrase “we are all in this together” ring hollow for those on the bottom rung. The great irony, some note, is that these inequities are coming at a time when the country is embroiled in a national conversation about eradicating systemic injustices and empowering the Black Lives Matter movement.
