Woman dies after nursing home attack

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — An 83-year-old female resident of a Buffalo nursing home has died from injuries suffered in a fight with another resident of the facility.

The victim mistakenly walked into another room at Emerald South Nursing Home on Friday morning and was attacked by a male resident in his 80s. The woman died Sunday.

Doctors told police the victim suffered facial lacerations, a broken nose, broken ribs and a collapsed lung. An autopsy performed Tuesday showed that the injuries to the woman, who was in poor health, contributed to her death.

Police say both residents were previously diagnosed with dementia.

Local authorities and the New York State Department of Health are investigating.
