The Forbes Celebrity 100 List

Forbes is out with its Celebrity 100 List, which ranks stars' pre-tax earnings from June 2017 to June of 2018.

There has been a better time to be famous than now, according to Zack O'Malley Greenburg, Forbes senior media and entertainment editor.

An unprecedented 11 celebrities earned at least $100 million over the past year. The entry-level salary on this list is $35 million. The entire group pulls in a combined $6.3 billion.

Floyd Mayweather topped the list at $285 million, thanks to his fight with Conor McGregor last August. Zack says that anytime Floyd fights he tops this list. In this case, it wasn't even a traditional boxing match, but people still tuned in and Floyd got a huge cut of the revenue.

At No. 2, with $239 million, is George Clooney. That's the largest single-year payout for any actor, but George's acting had little to do with it. His earnings were almost entirely from the sale of his tequila brand, Casamigos, to Diageo for $700 million with the potential for the sale to go up to $1 billion over the next several years.

Third on the list and Forbes cover star for August is Kylie Jenner. At just 20, she is expected to become the world's youngest self-made billionaire later this year, thanks to her company Kylie Cosmetics and the way she's leveraged her more than 100 million Instagram followers.

Zack says Kylie serves double duty in this issue of Forbes. She is near the top of the list of the wealthiest self-made women with a net worth of nearly $1 billion. And on the Celebrity 100, she has made $166.5 million in annual pre-tax earnings.

At No. 5, Dwayne Johnson leveraged his social media following to hit $124 million, the highest acting-related earnings since the Celebrity 100 launched 20 years ago.

Zack says The Rock isn't just getting $20 million up front for a movie plus more money on the back end. He is also getting a seven-figure cut of the marketing budget. Whatever the studio would spend on an ad-buy, it is giving to Johnson instead if he guarantees he'll promote the movie on his Instagram and other social media channels.

Let's not skip No. 4: Judge Judy, a regular on the Celebrity 100, who made a killing this year at $147 million because she sold her library for about $100 million. Zack says that is a pretty solid way to rocket yourself up the list.

Rounding out the top 10 are U2, Coldplay, Lionel Messi, Ed Sheeran, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
