Elevated lead levels at some Yonkers schools

Yonkers began testing all the water fixtures in the school district in March. To date results from 20 of the district's 39 buildings have been released. The district began sending letters home about the results on May 25.

So far more than 420 Yonkers school water fixtures have been tested, and 36 were found to have lead levels above the federal threshold.

Rosemarie Ann Siraguas Elementary School in Yonkers is s one of a dozen Yonkers schools found to have one faucet or more contaminated with unsafe levels of lead. The nurse's office faucet was one of the worst offenders having lead level reading 50 times the federal threshold.

The school with the worst lead problem is Lincoln High School. Testing found 10 faucets contaminated with high levels of lead.
