Bedrooms in Brooklyn renting for $1,800 a month

NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - Bedrooms in Brooklyn renting for $1,800 a month?  It's happening.

A new shared-living space has opened in Crown Heights, Brooklyn with bedrooms starting at almost $2,000 a month.  A startup called Common has opened the building for 19 tenants.

The company says the rooms are inside a building with common-area kitchens, dining rooms and living rooms.

The fully-furnished units at 1162 Pacific Street are month-to-month and include all utilities in the price.  It also has less stringent financial requirements than traditional apartments in the city which generally require two years of tax returns and income of 40 times the monthly rent.

The company says it received more than 300 applications for the 19 bedrooms at its first property.

It plans to convert other buildings in Crown Heights into shared spaces.  Common raised $7.5 million from venture capital firms this summer to move forward with its plans.
