Adams says he and Trump talked about making the Bronx great again, not his legal case

Just two days before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, New York City Mayor Eric Adams met with Trump to "discuss New Yorkers’ priorities."

According to Adams, the meeting focused on several issues, including public safety, economic development, and infrastructure investment.

Adams claims the two discussed how the federal government can better support New York’s growth and address pressing needs.

Trump visits Bronx barbershop ahead of Al Smith dinner in NYC

Trump is expected to stop by King of Knockouts barbershop ahead of the Al Smith charity event, though it's unclear whether he'll be getting a haircut.

"President Trump and I had a productive conversation about New York’s needs and what’s best for our city, and how the federal government can play a more helpful role in improving the lives of New Yorkers. While we briefly touched on a number of issues, we specifically focused on the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas and how it will have a positive impact on public safety in our country; how we can bring manufacturing jobs back to New York, particularly in the Bronx; and how we can continue to make federal investments in New York City, especially when it comes to infrastructure."

Adams also emphasized that the meeting did not include discussions about his ongoing legal case.

Trump says he'll consider pardoning NYC Mayor Eric Adams

President-elect Donald Trump said he’d consider pardoning indicted New York City Mayor Eric Adams during a Monday morning news conference from his Mar-a-Lago, Florida, resort.

"To be clear, we did not discuss my legal case, and those who suggest the mayor of the largest city in the nation shouldn't meet with the incoming president to discuss our city's priorities because of inaccurate speculation or because we're from different parties clearly care more about politics than people. Like I’ve always done, I will take every opportunity possible to advocate for New Yorkers and our city, and after our discussion, I strongly believe there is much our city and the federal government can partner on to make New York City safer, stronger, and more affordable. I thank President Trump for his time and attention and look forward to working with him to benefit all New Yorkers."

The meeting signaled the potential for federal intervention in New York City's migrant crisis and congestion pricing issues.

Will Adams and Trump work together?

Adams and Trump are partially aligned, politically, on some immigration matters. Adams has said he is in favor of doing more to deport immigrants accused of crimes.

In December, Adams met with Trump’s incoming "Border Czar" Tom Homan. Adams has long been critical of New York City ordinances that limit cooperation between city law enforcement officials and federal immigration enforcement agencies.

The backstory:

Even before the election, Adams began voicing a desire to work with Trump, arguing the federal government and the city have to work together even if there are differing political views.

Will Trump pardon Adams?

Trump has also expressed warmth for Adams. After the mayor was indicted, Trump said he suspected the charges were brought because Adams had criticized President Joe Biden's immigration policies.

The other side:

Adams has been criticized for appearing to warm up to Trump and some of his policies. Critics accuse Adams of doing that in the hopes that Trump will pardon him for federal corruption charges he's facing.
