In a gift from the political gods, Nixon was waylaid by subway trouble on her way over to the event where she attacked Gov. Andrew Cuomo as a "fake Democrat" responsible for New York's vast income, educational, and racial inequality.

In a tweet posted Monday afternoon, actress Cynthia Nixon of "Sex and the City" fame announced that she is running for governor of New York. The tweet includes a video and a link to a campaign donation page called "Cynthia for NY." In recent years, Nixon, 51, has been vocal and visible for progressive causes. She supports New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and has openly criticized Gov. Andrew Cuomo, both Democrats. Her wife, Christine Marinoni, until recently worked for de Blasio.

NY and NJ lawmakers debate new gun laws

The gun control debate is front and center in state capitols across the country in response to the high school massacre in Florida. But partisan politics have already put New York and New Jersey on separate paths. Two weeks after the Parkland shooting, New Jersey is now poised to become one of the first states to pass so-called red flag laws to allow a judge to temporarily take guns away from anyone who appears to pose a threat to society. Democrats in the New York Senate are also pushing to immediately adopt stricter gun control rules, including closing loopholes on bump stocks, which make high-powered rifles fire faster. But state Republicans blocked that push, for now, instead focusing on efforts to add more safety and armed personnel to potential targets, like schools.

They say they just can't sit on the sidelines anymore and will do everything in their power to create change. Alumni of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who now live in New York organized a meeting in Manhattan Monday evening to honor the 17 victims of the shooting. They are mobilizing to support the students in Florida.

U.S. indicts 13 Russians

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Friday laid out the criminal charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. He said the plot began back in 2014 and was funded by a Russian businessman with close ties to Putin. The indictment alleges the Russian defendants created phony identities online and using social media such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter started their sophisticated campaign to sway public opinion in the United States in favor of Donald Trump and against Hillary Clinton.
