Ultramarathoner running 200 miles around Central Park for cancer charity

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - An ultramarathoner will be trying to make history this weekend by running around Central Park 33 times. That's 200 miles! But he's not just doing it for the record books.

Eric Gelber began his "Journey toward a cure" back in 2007 to honor a friend battling myeloma, a deadly blood cancer. Nine years later, the 49-year-old runner has made it his mission to raise awareness and money for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

This weekend, Gelber hopes to make history. Friday morning, he began his 200-mile, 33-lap trek around Central Park. Over the 2.5 days, hundreds of runners will come out to support Gelber, one way or another.

Of course Gelber hopes he can hit the 200-mile mark on this third attempt, but really the only one that matters is $1 million. His fundraising efforts for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation have a chance to surpass that goal number this weekend.
