Police shoot, kill man who stabbed partner

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - A man was shot and killed by police after stabbing his domestic partner inside an apartment building on the Lower East Side, according to the NYPD.

The victim called 911 on Friday just before 7 a.m. to report that his partner had him barricaded in a bathroom on the sixth floor at 227 Cherry St., said police.

Cops responded and the man who had called 911 told them the suspect was in the rear of the apartment.

Cops found the suspect in a closet. They escorted him towards a hallway when he broke away and grabbed a large knife from the kitchen and attacked his partner, said NYPD Chief of Det. Terrence Monahan.

Cops opened fire and discharged five shots.

The suspect was rushed to Beekman Downtown Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was treated for slash wounds to the face and a graze wound to the shoulder. He was expected to recover, said Monahan.

A photo of the butcher knife was shown to reporters at a news conference just hours after the incident. Body cameras recorded the entire incident but would not be made public due to "an injunction from the courts."

The couple has a long history of domestic violence, added Monahan. There was an order of protection in place against the suspect.
