Phoenix Police: 2 caregivers arrested after young girl dies

PHOENIX (AP/KSAZ) - Police in Phoenix say a young girl has died and her caregivers have been arrested on suspicion of homicide and child abuse.

They say 28-year-old Tayran Slash and 21-year-old Sharonta Adams have both been booked into jail. On Monday, Slash made his first appearing in court, as he faces murder charges for his alleged role in the child's death. In addition, Slash had a warrant out for his arrest from Peoria, prior to this incident.

Police responded to a call of an unresponsive child near 16th Street and Indian School Road around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

When Fire Department paramedics arrived the scene, they found the child of about 2 years old had multiple injuries.

The girl was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Medical staff told police the child had obvious signs of child abuse and detectives developed probable cause to arrest both caregivers.

The investigation is ongoing. The child's name has not been released.

Bond is set at $750,000 for Slash, and for Adams, it was set at $250,000. Both are expected to make another court appearance before the end of the month.
