Nassau exec says he's been impersonated in suggestive text

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — The Nassau County Police Department is investigating a complaint from County Executive Ed Mangano that he's been impersonated in a sexually suggestive text message.

Mangano said Sunday that "words alone cannot express the depth of my anger" over the situation. He said his staff first found out about the messages in early February, when a public relations consultant said she had gotten a call from a media outlet asking about a sexual text message that appeared to be between her and an "Ed M." The woman, Karin Caro, denied having ever made or seen the message.

Mangano told the outlet, WCBS, "I am a victim here, I am being hacked. This is a lie and I will bring every legal action to catch this person and bring them to justice."

Caro issued a statement through her attorney saying she had never communicated with Mangano and didn't even have his cellphone number. She said she had a professional relationship with him through her public relations firm.

Mangano said the media outlet gave police something about the alleged exchange that had been received from an anonymous source. The Republican filed a complaint saying that he had been impersonated.

The police department says its intelligence unit and electronics squad are looking into it.
