More than 50 dogs, cats rescued from NJ home

Officials say more than 50 dogs and cats have been removed form a northern New Jersey home where they were living in "deplorable" conditions.

A total of 49 dogs and five cats were removed from the home on Hillcrest Place by police, reported NJ. com.

Authorities had gone to the two-story home in North Bergen on Wednesday after the tenant allegedly failed to appear in court on a series of summonses that were issued in recent weeks.

Seventeen of the dogs were puppies and three of the cats were kittens. One dog and 11 cats were also found dead.

Authorities say the home's interior was covered with urine and feces. They are investigating the matter as a hoarding situation.

The name of the tenant has not been released. It's not known if he'll face any charges related to the dogs.

Anyone interesting in adopting one of the rescued animals can call the North Bergen Health Department at 201-392-2085 or go to bcrescues.org.
