High schools raise money for Marietta teacher, baby

MARIETTA, Ga. - High schools in Marietta are coming together to raise money for a local teacher and her baby. 

Teigan Galloway, an English teacher at Lassiter High School, recently learned her 18-month-old baby Phoebe has a rare form of cancer.

"It's called Wagr syndrome and it deletes chromosomes and predisposed children to developing tumors on their kidneys," Teigan Galloway said.

At the end of August, Teigan and her husband Troy learned Phoebe had developed a tumor on her kidney.

"They have a treatment plan for Phoebe that entails chemotherapy and surgery, but even when she beats this she still has a 50% chance of it developing again," Galloway said.

Friday at Lassiter's football game, students and teachers rallied behind the Galloway family selling shirts and buttons in hopes of raising money for the toddler.

"The community is close knit so when someone needs help we want to be there," Lassiter high school teacher Lizz Etter said. "We want to support them so that's what we are doing." 

Lassiter raised $4,000 and at Kell High School, the school Galloway formerly taught at, raised close to $1,500. 

"I feel like thank you just isn't enough," Galloway said. "Everyone has truly gone above and beyond anything we could have ever hoped for."
