Harrison Ford to return as Indiana Jones

(FOX 5 NEWS) - Harrison Ford, who recently gave Han Solo another go, will return as his other iconic character -- Indiana Jones, Disney announced. Ford will again team up with director Steven Spielberg, who has helmed all four prior "Indiana Jones" movies.

"Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can't wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019," said Alan Horn, the chairman of Walt Disney Studios, in a statement. "It's rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn't be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven."

Disney said the new Indy will hit theaters on July 19, 2019, eleven years after the most recent installment, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," a commercial success that received mixed reviews.

Ford, 73, first donned Indiana's signature fedora in 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which is one of the American Film Institute's 100 Greatest American Films of All Time. The two other installments are 1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," which memorably co-starred Sean Connery as Indiana's father.

Ford recently appeared in 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," the highly successful return of the series. "Star Wars" creator George Lucas also dreamed up Indiana Jones. He sold both series to Disney as part of the megadeal for Lucasfilm Ltd.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce the film.
