Fire at Macy’s Holiday Market leaves FDNY firefighter hurt

A fast-moving fire tore through the Herald Square holiday market early Monday morning, destroying several vendor booths and leaving small business owners scrambling to salvage their holiday season.

The FDNY said the fire happened around 4 a.m. along Broadway between 35th and 36th Streets on Monday.

Sixty firefighters and EMS crews responded to the scene. One firefighter sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

"I was crying," said Slivus Duspiva, whose booth, filled with handcrafted ornaments, was reduced to ashes and debris.

Duspiva shared with FOX 5 that his family invested more than $10,000 in rent, hoping holiday sales would cover the cost.

"Other people are dependent on us. It’s terrible," he said.

The firefighter who was seriously injured has been taken to the hospital.

Urban Space, the company that oversees the market, called the incident a "devastating moment" for vendors.

"This is a devastating moment for our market family, especially during what should be a joyful holiday season," the company said in a statement. "We are actively working with local officials to determine the cause of the fire and ensure the site is secure and safe for the rest of the vendors."

Recovery efforts are now underway, and the community is stepping in to help. A GoFundMe account has been set up to support the affected vendors as they work to rebuild.
