Ferry gets stuck off Lower Manhattan

NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - A commuter ferry struck a sandbar off in Lower Manhattan Monday evening.

The NYC Ferry boat got stuck about 100 feet from Pier 11/Wall Street, just off South Street, around 6 p.m. It was headed for the Rockaways.

"This evening a ferry vessel became stuck after striking a submerged object near Pier 11," Melissa Grace, spokesperson for Mayor Bill de Blasio, told Fox 5. "We are glad all passengers were safely disembarked and regret the inconvenience. NYC Ferry will operate on a normal schedule Tuesday."

An NYPD vessel and an FDNY vessel responded to the disabled boat to offload about 120 passengers.

Video from SkyFoxHD showed dozens of commuters, wearing life jackets, being taken from the ferry to the pier.

The commuters then boarded two other boats for the journey to the Rockaways.

No one was hurt.

Anthony Hogrebe of the New York City Economic Development Coorperation, which oversees the ferry service, said the vessel that got stuck is not one of the new vessels in the fleet. It is a backup boat that operator Hornblower put into service while three newer boats are being repaired for corrosion.

Authorities are investigating what happened. In the meantime, crews are working to free the stuck ferry.
