NEW YORK - While some people are going vegetarian, putting their pet on the same diet could lead to fines or jail in England.
The Sun reports that dog owners could face jail and $27,000 fines for putting pets on a veggie diet.
The Animal Welfare Act states that dogs must be fed a "suitable diet."
Although the guidelines do not specifically mention vegan or vegetarian diets, their food intake must "meet all of your dog’s nutritional needs."
They could also have their pets taken away from them or be banned from owning animals ever again.
A lack of protein in a dog's diet can lead to serious health problems.
