Children with special needs get 'A Chance to Dance'

One studio in the Queen City is helping children with special needs make their dancing dreams come true.

Miss Donna's School of Dance has a program called 'A Chance to Dance' where they help little ones twirl around the dance floor.

Jacqueline Owen Whipple reached out to FOX 46 Charlotte and said she has her two daughters in the program.

"Three local teen girls donate their time to work with the teacher, Kimberly Smith, a Charlotte native, to provide these girls with an opportunity to dance," Jacqueline said.

Her two daughters, 7-year-old Ava who has achondroplasia, and 2-year-old Jessa who has spina bifida and is in a wheelchair, are in the program.

"The youngest teen girl, Hadley, gives her time every Sunday afternoon and Wednesday during the summer program simply to be Jessa's legs for her...not enough teens that would donate their time to help a toddler girl achieve her goal," Jacqueline said.

According to Jacqueline, the teacher Kimberly Smith does this program at no cost to families at this time. Children in the program have varying special needs, some severe.

Miss Donna's recital is this Sunday, June 12 starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Belk Theatre.
