Bob Marley Snapchat filter called 'digital blackface'

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - A Snapchat filter featuring reggae legend Bob Marley was released on Wednesday and was quickly criticized on social media.
The filter, which Snapchat offered on the unofficial but widely acknowledged marijuana smoker's holiday of April 20, was created in part with the Bob Marley Estate, according to Billboard.com.
Some critics say the filter which lets users place a cap, dreadlocks,a beard and darker skin on their photos is an attempt at digital blackface. Others shared posts saying that they were angry the music icon was "disrespected."
"The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music. Millions of Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley's music, and we respect his life and achievements," a spokesperson for Snapchat told Billboard.com.
Snapchat appeared to have caved to the criticism as it did not appear to be offering the filter by the early afternoon.
But fans fans have continued to show their displeasure with the digital nod.
