Blade attacks on the rise in NYC

Slashings have been happening on the streets and in the subway in New York. Even a plainclothes cop was hurt. Now numbers back up the growing fears. The NYPD said slashings and stabbings are up 20 percent over last year.

Four more slashings over the weekend have put many people on edge bringing the total number so far this year to 567. About 5:15pm on Saturday on Holland Avenue in the Bronx, two men got out of a car and stabbed a 26-year-old woman in the stomach and ear, the NYPD said.

Another slashing happened in the Bronx on Jerome Avenue at a food truck where police say a man sliced another customer in the face.

But incidents have happened citywide, above and below ground. The mayor says police are beefing up patrols.

As fears rise, some New Yorkers are taking their own precautions to protect themselves from the nearly 11 incidents happening every day.

One thing that has made these slashings challenging for police is that they're so random. Both victims and suspects have come in all ages, races and ethnic groups.
