Autism rates rise in 4-year-old children in NJ: CDC

NEW JERSEY (FOX 5 NY) - A new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found an increase in the number of 4-year-old children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in New Jersey.

The number of diagnoses between 2010 and 2014 jumped 43%, according to the report released Apr. 11.

The Garden State has the highest rates of ASD in the country. One in 35 children in New Jersey has ASD while one in 59 across the country has the disorder.

The sharp increase among 4-year-olds could be the result of more accurate or complete reporting. The study examined education and health records.

ASD is a developmental disability marked by social and communication impairments, as well as restricted interests and repetitive behaviors.

Identifying children with ASD early can help families get access to services in their communities.
