After Empire: The high-top fade

We know all the Lyon men have style. But when it comes to hair, Hakeem's high-top fade has a lot of fans talking. And in some cases, they are even copying the retro 'do.

I came to Levels, a barbershop on 125th Street in Harlem to talk about hair and specifically the high-top fade Hakeem rocks on "Empire."

Before Hakeem, it was Big Daddy Kane and Kid n Play that gave the high top life. But most youngsters rocking the same look today don't know that or that the godmother of the look is Grace Jones. Boom!

Larry, owner of the shop, tells me that what hasn't changed over time is the impact the artists, athletes and actors like Hakeem have on the youngsters.

Here, if you have hair they'll cut it. They'll also politic over the local sports teams. But they tell me almost every barber these days has at least a couple clients that rock that high top. And they take requests. This isn't unusual. Pick a person or a style, pull it up on your phone -- they'll bring it to life.

After 20 years in the game, they tell me "Your hair is saying something. Always has. Always will."
