Get ready to hear the names Rumi and Lumi a lot more at the dog park. A new list shows that dog lovers apparently cannot get enough of the two popular animated heroines.
Trendiest Dog Names
The KPop Demon Hunter and galactic explorer finished No. 1 and No. 2 for man’s best friend on Rover’s list of top trending names in the U.S., which was released on Tuesday. The NBA locked down the third-place spot with Melo, with the big question being if the owner’s a LaMelo Ball or Carmelo Anthony fan.
The website’s rankings are based on the relative increase in a name’s popularity.
Trendiest Cat Names
Cat owners, too, can’t resist a little fun. "Chicken Nugget" might be a fun way to get your cat’s attention — at least until the irked kitty realizes there’s no actual chicken nugget. Rover says the name is trending because of the "Gegagedigedagedago" or "Omega Nugget" meme.
The animated world makes an appearance in the feline world too with Miracle claiming the second slot, a surge attributed to a highly anticipated animated series of the same name. University of Wisconsin fans may disagree, but Cottagecore is credited with pushing Badger into the No. 3 spot.
What they're saying:
Rover Pet People Panelist and certified professional dog trainer Nicole Ellis pointed out that the company has seen a shift in how owners treat their four-legged friends in the 14 years the company has been compiling these names.
"Looking back across a decade and a half of data, we see pet names transforming from simple titles to vibrant time capsules of our cultural history, reflecting everything from 2010’s nostalgia to 2026’s newest obsessions," she said. "Today, naming a pet is a milestone event that reflects how completely dogs and cats have been integrated into the human family."

What's driving the trends
The backstory:
As Rover pointed out, pop culture often sows the seeds for what we like to call our pets. Of course, many of the traditional favorites stand the test of time and will often end up on far more dog tags and cat collars than these, but the list gives a snapshot of the hottest names in a given year. Rover has a separate list for the most popular names overall.
The top trend influencing dog names right now, according to Rover, is Cottagecore. The rural-inspired aesthetic led to multiple entries on both the dog and the cat top 10 lists, with other names, like Tarragon, Jammy, Alder, and Sorrel also surging.
A nostalgic theme ran through Rover's second most popular trend, vintage revival. Unsurprisingly, popular movies, television shows, music, and books are a common source of inspiration. Food and sports provide a nearly endless spring of ideas. Finally, nu-goth’s rise is leading to many more pets named Ravenna and Specter.
