2 construction workers die in falls in separate incidents in Manhattan

NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - Two construction workers fell to their deaths in separate incidents in Manhattan on Thursday.

In one case, Juan Chohillo, 43, fell from the 29th floor of a building under construction at 161 Maiden Lane at about 9:20 a.m. EMS found his body on a landing near street level.

An FDNY official said Chohillo was wearing a safety harness. Officials said the harness may not have been clipped in.

His cousin told Fox 5 that Chohillo, a native of Ecuador, was a father of five.

The job site at 161 Maiden Lane had 10 building violations and five were still open at the time of the incident.

Then hours later, two workers who were in a bucket lift at about the third-floor level at 400 West 33rd Street fell about 35 feet, officials said.

Police officers and medics found a 45-year-old man dead at the scene. Medics brought another 45-year-old man with head and body trauma to Bellevue Hospital Center in stable condition, the NYPD said.

The Department of Buildings is investigating both incidents.

The city's Medical Examiner will issue official causes of death of the workers.
