Disposing of expired medication

You've probably wondered how long you can keep your prescription or over-the-counter medication after it expires. Pharmacist Randy Shreck said the drugs could be effective for a long time after the expiration date, but there is really no way to know for sure. So how should you discard your expired drugs? Shreck said you should mix the medication with another substance (such as coffee grinds) to disguise it, place in a sealed bag, and then throw it in the trash.
