Escaping Nazi Germany
Evelyn Pike Rubin was 8 years old when her father was arrested on Kristallnacht in November 1938 and brought to an internment camp in Nazi Germany. Three weeks later, the Nazis released him and told him to leave the country. The family tried to go to Brazil, Cuba, Argentina, and Palestine but couldn't get papers to go anywhere, except for one place they had heard of through word of mouth: China.
