The Tri-State area is under an extreme cold warning this weekend as an arctic air blast brings some of the coldest wind chills of the season, meteorologists say. Temperatures will stay frigid, and wind chills are expected to drop below zero at times, prompting safety concerns for anyone outdoors. Forecasters warn that bare skin exposed to bitter wind chills could be at risk of frostbite in a short period of time, and residents should dress warmly in multiple layers, limit time outdoors and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.

Arctic air keeps a tight hold on the tri-state, with wind chills dropping to near zero and below across the region. A cold weather advisory remains in effect through the morning as temperatures struggle to climb out of the teens. Forecasters say a potential coastal storm is tracking far enough south to spare most of the area from significant snow, though a few flurries are possible out east. The bitter cold is also affecting the morning commute. Multiple crashes, disabled vehicles and a jackknifed tractor-trailer are causing delays on major roadways, including the New Jersey Turnpike, Belt Parkway and Gowanus Expressway. Rail commuters are seeing cancellations and delays on parts of the Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit.
