Packages bombs arrived in familiar manila envelopes affixed with lots of stamps, some bearing the American flag. But what was inside was alarming: crude pipe bombs wrapped in black tape, with wires sprouting from each end. None of the explosives detonated, and no one was hurt. But authorities quickly launched a wide-ranging investigation into the devices that targeted multiple Democrats — including two former presidents, and CNN in New York.

When a suspicious package was found in the CNN mailroom, the NYPD called in the Bomb Squad, which placed the apparent pipe bomb in a white sphere called a total containment vessel. The squad's goal is always to remove any immediate danger of the explosive device while keeping as much of it intact for forensic evidence.

Stabbing spree at nursery

A woman stabbed five people, including three baby girls, at a neighborhood nursery in Flushing, Queens, early Friday, the NYPD said. The woman then tried to end her life. One of the babies is three days old and suffered a stab wound to the stomach, another is 20 days old and suffered lacerations to the ear, chin, and lip. The third baby is one month old and suffered a stab wound to the stomach. The infants are in critical but stable condition at area hospitals.

Prosecutors say the cops ran pop-up brothels, including one in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Some people who work on the industrial block told Fox 5 they knew what was going on at building 206 but were afraid to call the cops.
