A transformer fire in Coney Island sparked a dangerous scene near West 36th Street between Surf Avenue and Mermaid Avenue, sending flames and thick smoke into the air before spreading to a nearby vehicle. FDNY crews knocked down the fire while Con Edison crews worked to secure the live electrical equipment. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.

The Trump administration has ordered ICE officers to suspend most vehicle stops after two deadly shootings last week. FOX 5’s Robert Moses reports the pause is expected to be short term as investigations continue. The order follows the deaths of Johann Sebastian Guerrero in Maine and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, both of whom were shot and killed during ICE encounters. A third person also died in Florida after authorities say he ran from an encounter with ICE agents and was hit by a tractor-trailer.

New York City health officials say 63 cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been confirmed on the Upper East Side, with 76 buildings testing positive for the bacteria that causes the illness. Officials say the spread appears to be slowing, but they are urging anyone in the impacted zip codes with cough, fever, shortness of breath or flu-like symptoms to see a doctor. Health officials are also warning residents in Westchester and Nassau counties to wash fruits and vegetables amid a nationwide cyclosporiasis outbreak. The CDC has reported more than 1,600 cases across 34 states since the beginning of May.

A City Council hearing could shape the future of New York City’s horse-drawn carriage industry. FOX 5’s Jessica Formoso reports from City Hall, where lawmakers are considering a bill that would phase out the 150-year-old industry and stop new licenses. The bill, known as Roman’s Law, was reintroduced after 18-year-old Roman Mahajan died during a runaway carriage ride in Central Park. Mayor Zohran Mamdani says he supports ending the industry but wants stronger worker transition protections in place.
