Woman gets 8 years in prison in death of infant

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) — A 23-year-old woman is heading to prison in the death of a friend's infant daughter.

Janell Campbell was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison in the death of a 3-week-old girl.

Authorities say Campbell previously pleaded no contest to charges of second-degree manslaughter and risk of injury to a child.

Investigators say Campbell and her young son were at the baby's house and stayed until the early hours of Dec. 5. At some point, the girl's mother left Campbell while she went to the store. The infant's mother told police she returned 15 minutes later to find Campbell holding her unresponsive daughter.

Police say Campbell told them she was "very drunk" and the child slipped out of her hands and fell to the floor.
