Variety's New Power of New York list also includes New Jersey

Variety's 2017 New Power of New York list recognizes 50 individuals who used their art and activism to effect change in New York. And this year, the list actually includes New Jersey figures, as well.

"Dear Evan Hansen" star and Tony winner Ben Platt is featured along with another Tony winner, Cynthia Erivo, who received critical acclaim for her performance in "The Color Purple" last year.

"Frozen" songwriters Kristen Anderson Lopez and Robert Lopez are also on the list.

This year, the issue features New Jersey icon Bruce Springsteen on the cover, said Elizabeth Wagmeister, a TV writer for Variety and contributor for Page Six TV.

Several of those selected are also honored with a written tribute from a close friend. Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis' tribute was written by Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Those featured come from a variety of backgrounds. The bottom line is if you made an impact on New York, you made the list.

Producer and director Michael Moore was featured for his activism. Actors Elizabeth Moss and Jake Gyllenhaal also made the list.
