WASHINGTON, D.C. - Nearly eight years ago, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States, promising to stir a "new national pride" and protect America from the "ravages" of countries he says have stolen U.S. jobs.
What did Trump say in his 2017 inauguration address?
What they're saying:
"Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities; rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation; an education system, flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of knowledge; and the crime and gangs and drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential," Trump said. "This American carnage stops right here and stops right now."

"Politicians prospered — but the jobs left, and the factories closed," Trump said. "The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country. Their victories have not been your victories; their triumphs have not been your triumphs; and while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land. ... The confrontation began an hour before Trump took the oath of office and escalated several hours later as the crowd of protesters swelled to more than 1,000, some wearing gas masks and with arms chained together inside PVC pipe.
Some protesters picked up bricks and concrete from the sidewalk and hurled them at police lines. Some rolled large metal trash cans at police.
Later, they set fire to a limousine on the perimeter of the secured zone, sending black smoke billowing into the sky during Trump’s procession.

As night fell, protesters set a bonfire blocks from the White House and frightened well-dressed Trump supporters as they ventured to the new president’s inaugural balls. Police briefly ordered ball goers to remain inside their hotel as they worked to contain advancing protesters.
Police reported over 200 arrests by evening and said six officers had been hurt.
