Subway performers urged to move

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City pilot program is urging break dancers to move their act from the subway train to above ground. The New York Times says the new initiative sets aside outdoor space for the performances that allows the dancers to earn tips legally. The NYPD says arrests of performers aboard subway trains more than doubled last year.

Under the program, officers hand out brightly colored cards with information about the dance initiative.

About 200 cards have been handed out to dance groups since the initiative began in May.

As a result, police say arrests have declined. There were 185 through late August compared to 264 during the same period last year.
