Storm brings snow, freezing rain to New Jersey, New York
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for a large part of the tristate New York area for a storm bringing snow, freezing rain, and then rain to the area Wednesday.
The day started out cloudy with the precipitation that started in the afternoon. The storm was expected to move across the area quite quickly.
The snow began to develop Wednesday afternoon and was expected to change to sleet and rain for New York City and the coastal areas, according to Fox 5 Chief Meteorologist Nick Gregory. Sleet and freezing rain would affect inland areas, he added. The evening commute could be challenging.
Total snow accumulations in portions of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York are expected to be in the 1- to 2-inch range with possible ice accumulations on top of that before rain and warming temperatures follow.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm.
Several dozen school districts announced early dismissals for Wednesday.
The National Weather Service warned that snow, sleet and/or freezing rain may cause significant travel difficulties. People were being asked to:
- Use caution when driving, walking, or biking, and allow for additional travel time.
- Check on neighbors, friends, and relatives, especially the elderly & those with disabilities, access and functional needs.
- If you lose power and have a disability or access needs, or use Life Sustaining Equipment (LSE) and need immediate assistance, please dial 911.
