Shopping deals: What to buy in July

July is typically a really good month for sales, but this Fourth of July might disappoint, according to Trae Bodge, a smart shopping expert with Slickdeals.

Because the holiday falls on a Wednesday this year, Trae isn't seeing a ton of impressive sale activity. Department stores like Macy's are offering some discounts, but don't expect anything spectacular this year besides the fireworks.

The bigger sale day this month will likely be Amazon Prime Day. No word yet on the specific date or what will be on sale, but Prime Day is typically mid-July. Keep your eyes peeled for that, and expect deep discounts on Amazon devices, such as Echo, Kindle, and more.

If you need to work on your beach body, you're in luck. Trae is expecting great sales in the fitness category, especially on fitness apparel and footwear. Check out Finishline and Nike and others like them.

Right now Nike has up to 55 percent off tanks, leggings, sneakers, and more. Dick's Sporting Goods has up to 70 percent off clearance. Joe's New Balance Outlet has an extra 25 percent off markdowns, such as sneakers originally $135 that are now just $45.

Games are on sale this month, too. Trae says good deals are available, particularly if you're a member of Best Buy, Xbox, or PlayStation. Look for free bundles and discounts plus great sales on games.

This is also a good time to start browsing the back-to-school sales, as crazy as that sounds. Apparel is especially cheap right now. Gymboree, Forever21, and Old Navy have clothing 40 percent to 55 percent off. So this is a good time to stock up on clothes for the kids.

Wait until at least August for better deals on back-to-school supplies, such as backpacks and lunchboxes.

Also, hold out until next month for better sales on grills and patio furniture.
