The Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies have called off their search for a boater who vanished after a vessel overturned near Fire Island Inlet Tuesday evening.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time," said Capt. Andrew Tucci, the commander of Sector Long Island Sound. "We are deeply saddened by this outcome, and we appreciate the dedicated efforts and professionalism of all of those involved in the search."

A Coast Guard crew rescued two people from a capsized 23-foot recreational boat Tuesday. They told the crew that a third person was with them but went missing.

The Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, New York Police Department, New York Air National Guard, and Suffolk County Police participated in a 35-hour search of an area of about 388 square nautical miles from Tuesday until Wednesday night.
