Robert De Niro salutes FDNY

Legendary actor Robert De Niro is in the midst of shooting a new movie, but he took time out to salute the New York City Fire Department at a special event Thursday night in Manhattan.

The Goodfellas star say he has had several close calls with fires of the years, and, thanks to the FDNY, he can live to tell about them.

In 2012, De Niro's Central Park West apartment went up in flames.

“I wasn’t at the fire when we had that. When I was kid we came home to a fire in my apartment. It was not nice, not a good thing. I’ve been close to some fires and they are terrifying," said De Niro.

He and his wife, Grace Hightower De Niro, spoke with Good Day NY co-host Rosanna Scotto at the 'Celebrating 150 Years of the FDNY' at Nobu 57.

“Until the fire, I was one of those people who walked around and respected the firefighters and saw what they had done, but not really. Now I understand," said Hightower De Niro.
