Report: Fired FBI official McCabe could face criminal charges

The U.S. Justice Department's inspector general has sent a criminal referral for fired FBI official Andrew McCabe to the top federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., Fox News reported.

A report by the Office of the Inspector General found that McCabe leaked a self-serving story to the press and later either lied to or misled then-Director James Comey and federal investigators.

That prompted U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions to fire McCabe on March 16, just days shy of his planned retirement.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz has asked U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jessie Liu to review the findings and decide if McCabe should be charged, a source confirmed to Fox News.

The DOJ, OIG, and U.S. attorney's office all declined to comment.

McCabe and his lawyer have said he never misled anyone.
