Powerboat overturns off Long Island

EAST ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) -- Police say the operator of a powerboat and four passengers had to be rescued from the waters off Long Island after the boat overturned.

The boat operator, a 35-year-old man from East Meadow, New York, was arrested on a charge of boating while intoxicated.

Authorities say the 24-foot speedboat was in the Great South Bay when it overturned shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday.

Emergency responders arrived to find the five people in the water, holding onto the overturned boat. Two of the five were wearing life jackets.

They were rescued and offered medical assistance when they got back to land, which they declined.
