Police rescue man from frozen lake on Long Island

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Police on Long Island say they rescued a man who fell into a frozen lake while trying to retrieve his dog.

The incident happened shortly before noon Saturday at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown.

Police say a 56-year-old man was walking his dogs when one of the dogs got loose and ran onto a frozen lake. The man attempted to retrieve the dog and fell in the lake in chest-deep water.

Suffolk County police and park rangers responded and used a rope to pull the man out. The dog was able to walk off the ice.

Police say the man had been in the water for about 25 minutes. He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of hypothermia. His name was not released.
